Group I – Whipper’s People Power
I support Council’s current position and oppose all Longwall mining, Coal Seam Gas mining and exploration and All New Mining in the shire. This is predominately because the evidence and science indicate that these activities will have irreparable harm on our aquifer systems and our agricultural land. I have been closely involved in discussion with State Ministers from Mining and Planning as well as the Office of Water contributing to the formation of Aquifer Interference and Strategic Land Use Policies. I support the status quo in relation to current mining activities at Medway by Boral, but oppose an increase in production and the export of Coal Internationally.
Councillor Jim Mauger directed me to this article in the Southern Highland News as his response to our questions.
Jim Clark – The Greens
Extractive industries in the highlands need to be mindful of their environmental impact on water, air and sound emissions. Standards for existing mines such as Medway colliery have been very lax. Impacts on residents need to be minimized.
